School already asked for sitting all day. Now the worksheet is out and the body is still cold—fidgety, stuck, or half-asleep at the desk.
“Sit down and focus” turns into a war. You both lose before the first problem. You’re not imagining it. Asking a cold engine to jump straight into desk work often fails.
I’m Andrew Johnson—25 years in LA special ed, dad of three. On these nights I don’t start with the worksheet. I give the body a short start first, then move to work in a fixed order the child can manage.

Kitchen translation: warm the body on purpose before you ask for desk work. You aren’t waiting for motivation to appear at the chair. You’re giving a short body start so “work next” has a chance. Same order every night you use it. Order is the skill.
Step by step
The tool is a body-first start: 5–10 minutes of movement right before homework, then Body first → Work next. Your child manages the switch into work. You protect the order.
- Agree on tonight’s body start (jumping jacks, a bike loop around the block, one full dance song, wall push-ups—whatever your child will actually do).
- Say the rule out loud once: Body first → Work next.
- Child does the 5–10 minute body start. You don’t use this time for homework reminders.
- When it ends, child checks a simple box or sticky: Body first → Work next.
- Sit and open homework. No “one more song” loop that replaces the work.
- Keep the same order every school night you run this practice.
- If homework still stalls after the body start, shrink the first desk step. Don’t skip tomorrow’s body start as punishment.
Put shoes or the speaker by the homework spot as a visible Body-first cue. When the body start ends, shoes come off or the speaker stops—then the desk starts. One dance song counts. Skip anything that turns into a forty-minute sidetrack. Body start ends, then work.
Try saying
“Body feels stuck. Body first. Work next. Same order every night.”
